The wedding took place in Genoa Bay, BC, at Bird’s Eye Cove Farm.  This was a new location for me, but when I visited in March, I was astounded!  They feature an traditional hand cut timber frame facility, known as ‘The Barn’, which is set on a large farm overlooking a harbour!

Out of all of the couples I have ever worked with, this one is at or near the top of the pile in terms of how long we have known each other! The groom, Joel, and I grew up together on beautiful Vancouver Island, in Duncan.  We grew up camping at Rathtrevor Park and getting into trouble (stargazing on the beach is fun, but it is wise to tell your parents where you are going hehe), hiking (the Nootka trail was my favourite trail by far), and drinking beer and chatting in the hot tub.  Joel even helped me out with some college homework when I thought I would like to be a computer science major!  (that didn’t last long for me, but have a look at Joel’s website (http://www.zineer.com) for converting photos/videos to digital, as well as websites and more!

Joel and Danielle are both creative, so I knew their wedding would include a lot of creative components.  Joel LOVES orange, so you may notice a touch of orange or two in this video:)

I hope you enjoy this video, as I really enjoyed creating it, and I think it turned out really well!  I look forward to going home to the island every time, and I look forward to spending more time with Joel & Danielle!

The wedding took place in June of this year, at the beautiful St. Eugene Golf Resort & Casino in Cranbrook, BC.  I had never been to Cranbrook before, but I was seriously impressed with the venue they had chosen!  The staff were always friendly and helpful, the food was amazing, and the new pavilion  was sensational!  It is newly built specifically for hosting weddings, and has gorgeous lighting, great seating, and is simply a great place to have a party!

Below is the video we created for Brad & Nicole as we spent the day shooting with them.  It was a very fun weekend (we arrived on Friday night and stayed until Sunday morning), and we hope to be able to go back again someday!

Be Blessed,

Mark

The best part for me was when it came time to present the same day edit.  I usually don’t get nervous at weddings, but this time I definitely was sweating a little bit, as I had never shown my work to clients so quickly!  But the lights dimmed, and as the video played, I could tell that they loved it!

This past weekend I was blessed to be able to take part in the wedding celebration of Simon & Kerri.  The ceremony took place in the Botanical Garden’s in Devon, Alberta, and the reception was held at the Santa Maria Goretti Centre in Edmonton, Alberta. Both sites turned out to be fantastic, and the wedding was beautiful!

When I first met with Kerri, she really REALLY wanted to have a same day edit shown for all of the guests at the reception.  I was a little bit hesitant, as I had never created one of these before, and I knew that it would be a lot of work in a very short amount of time!

However, the day finally arrived, and I headed up to Edmonton for the wedding.  And the day turned out to be perfect!  Everything went smoothly, and the entire wedding party was great!  Overall it was an amazing day!

Looking back though I can say that the past year has been one of the most amazing years of my life!

filed under: Personal

At this time last year, so many changes were happening.  I had just quit my full time job, and I was travelling with my family throughout the United States, and we were about to head off to Europe!

Looking back though I can say that the past year has been one of the most amazing years of my life!

Over the past year, I have been working hard on my brand, my website, and myself as a wedding photographer in Calgary.  We have also launched into the market of calgary wedding videographers, which actually has become a lot more popular than I ever imagined!  This summer is looking like it is going to be a great summer with a huge variety of amazing couples that we plan to work with!  I am also excited to do some travelling and shoot some weddings in different locales such as St. Eugene’s in Cranbrook, BC, a small farm near Victoria, BC, and in Edmonton at the Santa Maria Goretti Center - and those are just for wedding cinema! Hopefully someday we will be able to shoot some destination weddings in places like Cuba, Mexico, the Dominican Republic, or anywhere else in the Caribbean! I did do an engagement session on the island of Roatan, Honduras (which you can see here) and it was amazing!

I think the biggest change that has happened over the last year though is how much I have grown as an artist and a visionary. When I went travelling last year, I took my Canon 5D, 2 lenses (a 35mm Leica lens and a Canon 135mm), and my Mamiya C330.  Since both lenses were prime lenses (meaning they have no ability to zoom), it really forced me to slow down and take my time composing each image one at a time.  Whether is meant moving backward or forward a bit, or kneeling down on the ground, I purposefully tried to shoot each image at a slower rate and nail the exposure and composition of each shot.

The film camera that I brought along also caused a different effect.  The camera that I use (a Mamiya C330) shoots medium format film, which results in a square image!  This caused me to focus even more on composition than ever!  I LOVE the images that this camera produces though, and I am slowly but surely developing, scanning, and editing the film.

I have to admit though that the past year hasn’t been an easy one by any means.  It’s been a very challenging year, probably the most challenging of all of the 28 years I have spent on Earth! There have been many stressful moments, and honestly most of them have involved not knowing exactly when the next pay cheque is going to be coming in.  The past year has been a huge lesson in trusting God to provide for me, and waiting to see how he will do so!  One of my favourite Bible verses has become Jeremiah 29:11 – “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

It’s also been challenging to adjust to life as a self employed person.  I have always been a rather social person, and I do well when I am surrounded by friends.  Adjusting to working by myself hasn’t been the easiest, and while I am now doing well and getting everything organized for this summer, it has been tough trying to stay on task and get things accomplished at certain times!

Overall I can’t complain a single bit about the last year, and I am very happy with where I currently am (and where my business is heading) in the future!  I am excited for this summer, and of course the many years beyond, and I am very excited to see how Cinema | Stills merge together to create memories that are unimaginable!

Be blessed,

Mark

Below are the results of that day, and the first steps in what I think are the right direction.

Remember this post, entitled “Today”?

That post wasn’t just about me and my feelings, it was about starting a new way of shooting and the next step towards my goal in both business and personal life.

That day was Isaiah & Meaghan’s wedding day, and I wrote it a few hours before the day started.  It was an amazing day with a truly amazing couple.  There really is no other words that I can use to describe them, as I can’t really put into words how I feel about these two.  Sometimes less is more I guess.

Below are the results of that day, and the first steps in what I think are the right direction.

I hope you enjoy, and I look forward to seeing what the next steps are!

Be blessed,

Mark
